Design Guidelines for Sustainable Tourism Development (Draft)

South Australia’s vision is to be an inspirational leader in innovative and sustainable tourism. This vision has implications for the way new tourism product is developed in South Australia. For example, it is widely recognised that nature-based tourism is potentially one of the fastest growing markets within mainstream tourism, both in Australia and worldwide. South Australia’s unspoilt natural and cultural attractions mean that the State is well placed to develop innovative and sustainable tourism product that can satisfy this growing market demand.

These Guidelines have been prepared by the South Australian Tourism Commission for developers who, consistent with the State’s Tourism Strategy, wish to undertake small to medium sized tourism accommodation developments. The use of these guidelines will assist in improving the quality of new tourism development and minimise environmental impacts.

The Guidelines are intended to have wide application and also be useful for State and Local Government authorities involved in development assessment and policy. A shared understanding and commitment towards the vision of sustainable tourism development by both Government and developers will help to reduce the risks involved and encourage new investment.

These Guidelines will be complemented by other initiatives such as the ‘Greening Hotels’ initiative for existing development. This publication represents a significant step forward in achieving South Australia’s vision of an innovative and sustainable future for the tourism industry.
