Dewpoint Products – Strippable Protective Coatings [ECG-Premium]
Overview:
Water based peelable protective coatings for interior exterior surfaces of materials during transport and building construction.
Product Description:
A range of water based coatings for application in temporarily protecting various construction materials during transport and building construction. The coatings can protect acrylic, thermoset plastics, painted surfaces, glass, metals, and non porous wood surfaces and can be applied by sprayer, roller, or brush. The coatings will form a skin-tight protective barrier to prevent damage from staining, surface scratches, electrical cables, abrasions, dirt, paint overspray, cement splatter and general protection during transport, installation and the construction process. The coatings will last 12 to 24 months, are resistant to UV and weather damage, and do not leave any adhesive residue. The peelable coatings can be removed by hand or other techniques and disposed of to landfill, where natural bacteria will break down a majority of the polymer.

INTEGRATED DESIGN AND POLICY ISSUES
Dewpoint’s Temporary Protective Coatings area easy to apply and can save on labour costs and time delays to clean or replace materials damaged during the construction process. They also reduce the need to use toxic cleaners such as solvents to remove paint overspray and other stains.
HUMAN HEALTH
Health
There are no known health effects associated with the application and proper use of these products.

Indoor Environment Quality
Products are water based and do not contain solvents or added VOCs and will not have negative impacts on indoor environment quality. Coatings may reduce the presence of dust and dirt deposited during construction, improving indoor environment quality upon removal, prior to occupation.

ECOLOGICAL QUALITY
Terrestrial
Emissions – Coatings contain a water soluble polymer made from petroleum based polymers. The extraction of fossil fuels can result in localised emissions around oil fields and spills.
Physical – Petrochemical extraction can cause localised terrestrial disturbance around oil fields, via mining infrastructure and subsidence.
Aquatic
Emissions – Petroleum extraction and distribution can contribute to oil spills at sea.
Physical – Petrochemical extraction can cause localised aquatic disturbance around oil fields via mining infrastructure and dredging of the seabed.
Atmosphere
Greenhouse (GHG) – Coatings are made from petroleum derived feed stock, ethylene and will have GHG emissions relating to its manufacture. The protective coatings prevent the use of additional chemicals, labour, or replacement materials due to damage during transport or construction. The emissions from manufacture could be partially offset by reducing GHG emissions associated with cleaning and replacing damaged materials.
Greenhouse intensity ~ Approximately0.97 kgCO2/litre
Transport intensity – Product is manufactured in USA. GHG intensities for shipping product are shown below. Shipping port from country of origin is New York. Destination port is Cape Town.

Operational efficiency – Coatings are easily applied and easily removed by hand
Re-use Efficiency – Coatings are not designed for reuse
Toxics and Pollutants – Manufacturing of ethylene based polymers has associated emissions of ethylene to the atmosphere.
Ozone Depletion – There are no ozone depleting effects associated with the manufacture or use of this product.
Urban Heat Island Effects – Not applicable
Noise – Not applicable
Biodiversity
The protective coatings could help reduce the amount of harmful cleaning chemicals from entering localised ecosystems around building construction sites. The polymers that make up the coatings have not been identified as directly harmful to terrestrial or aquatic organisms, but oil spills resulting from the extraction of petroleum can reduce biodiversity in localised areas.
RESOURCE DEPLETION
Resource Efficiency
The coatings are made from processed polymers derived from petroleum, a limited natural resource. However, they can protect the finished product from superficial and even some moderate damage and are likely therefore to reduce wasted resources due to lost time and replacement of damaged items.
Embodied Fossil Fuel Energy
Approximately 41.55 MJ/ Litre
Transport intensity – Product is manufactured in USA. Energy intensities for shipping product are shown below. Shipping port from country of origin is New York. Destination port is Cape Town.
- Energy Intensity for Container Shipping of Strippable Protective Coatings – 1.78MJ / litre
Embodied Water
Coatings are over 50% water and this figure is expected to be high. However, coatings could lead to reduced water use in the cleaning up of jobsites and materials after construction.
Durability
Products will remain peelable up to 24 months under normal conditions. Coatings will become brittle when cold, and removal at near freezing temperatures is not recommended. Coatings are resistant to weather, but will soften after contact with water and traffic or contact should be avoided until dry.
Reusability
Coatings are not designed to be reused.
Repairability
Product will bind to itself and is therefore easily repaired by applying additional coating over damaged area, according to supplier’s instructions.
Design for Dematerialisation
Use of the temporary protective coatings avoids the use of harsh cleaners, solvents, and additional labour to remove stains such as paint overspray and oil stains. The coatings prevent the need to replace materials that have been damaged during transport or construction, therefore reducing overall material consumption.
Design for Disassembly
Coatings are easily removed by hand, water spray, or other removal techniques.
Recyclability
Products are not designed to be recycled. The manufacturer claims products are biodegradable. - They are soluble in water and natural bacteria are able to break down the polymer in prolonged contact with moist conditions.
Maintenance
Typically no maintenance is required. If the coatings are to be left on for extended periods of time over 12 months, the manufacturer recommends applying an acrylic topcoat for added durability.
