Eco-Insulation - Cellulose Fibre Ceiling Insulation [ECG-Premium] [Cat.1-Manufactured]
Overview:
Cellulose fibre is an efficient and ecologically preferred insulation material made from recycled newspaper mixed with environmentally friendly Boron additives. Suitable for residential and light-commercial ceilings.
Product Description:
Product is a non-toxic, non-irritating, 100% fire retardant insulation sourced from 100% recycled material. Cellulose fibre insulation’s loose fill property ensures no gaps in installation, eliminating thermal bridging or thermal short-circuiting. Product does not deteriorate and is resistant to both wet and dry rot.
Eco-Insulation’s cellulose fibre insulation does not contain nor does it require any poisonous vermin or insect repellents. Undesirables simply avoid the product because it attaches itself to their fur and paws.

ECOSPECIFIER LIFE-CYCLE ASSESSMENT
INTEGRATED DESIGN AND POLICY ISSUES
Eco-Insulation’s Cellulose Fibre Insulation reduces heat flow by creating small pockets of still air that reduce the rate of conductive heat transfer increasing the energy efficiency of a building. The subsequent reduction of heat transfer can minimise heating and cooling loads placed on mechanical air conditioning systems in a building and potentially allow for the integration (or natural ventilation period) for mixed mode air conditioning (natural ventilation with optional mechanical air conditioning). This leads to a significant reduction in the overall energy consumption of air conditioning plant which represents the largest energy user in a building. Furthermore, greater levels of insulation can reduce HVAC plant sizes.
HUMAN HEALTH
Health
Product is made from cellulose fibre which will not cause any skin or other irritations. Product does not contain VOCs, and there is no need for any binders, adhesives or blowing agents, reducing associated health impacts.
In the context of this product, Boron and Boric Acid are considered non-toxic to humans. However, European Comission classified boric acid as reprotoxic category 2, based on animal studies.
Comfort
Installing Eco-Insulation’s Cellulose Fibre Insulation will either reduce heat inflow into a building (summer) or retain heat within a building (winter), improving occupants’ thermal comfort.
Indoor Environment Quality
Product is non-toxic, contains no VOCs, formaldehyde or glass fibre, plastic or asbestos and does not produce dust.

Safety
Product does not raise safety issues.

ECOLOGICAL QUALITY
Terrestrial
Emissions – Product is made from recycled news print (cellulose fibre), reducing the waste impact of discarded newsprint in landfill on the terrestrial environment.
Physical – Using recycled material reduces impacts to the terrestrial environment from forestry and mining including loss of topsoil and reduced soil productivity due to nutrient loss, as well as further land impacts derived from transport.
Aquatic
Emissions –Aquatic pollution associated with deforestation and mining is reduced by using recycled material at manufacturing.
Physical – Siltation and erosion created by uncontrolled runoff from deforested and mined areas can create significant damage in creeks, estuarine and marine environments. These impacts are reduced by using recycled materials.
Atmosphere
Greenhouse (GHG) – Manufacturer runs efficient electrical mills which are switched on only during manufacturing, while some other factories operate with non-stop working furnaces and boilers. Machinery used by Eco-Insulation is made from recycled steel and other second hand machines. These techniques help to reduce greenhouse gas emission related to manufacturing of product.
Cellulose insulation is one of the lowest embodied energy and greenhouse insulations available worldwide.
Greenhouse intensity – 75mm thick product: 1.5 kgCO2e/m²*
*Calculation is based on data sourced from Alcorn, NZ
Thermal conductivity: 0.038 W/(m*K)
NOTE: this data does not include the carbon sink value of the insulation-a further positive characteristic of the product.
Transport intensity – Product is manufactured in Cape Town, South Africa. Table below provides land transportation greenhouse intensity figures to help calculate the greenhouse gas intensity of land transportation.

Operational efficiency – Product reduces energy consumption in operation. It does not require any maintenance.
Re-use Efficiency – Product is unlikely to be re-used, but it is recyclable.
Toxics and Pollutants – Product is non-toxic.
Ozone Depletion – Reduced energy consumption may reduce Ozone Depletion caused by fossil fuel operated plants.
Urban Heat Island Effects – Not applicable
Noise – Product improves acoustical performance.
Biodiversity
Using recycled material eliminates the impacts of wood production and mining associated with other forms of insulations.
RESOURCE DEPLETION
Resource Efficiency
Eco-Insulation’s Cellulose Fibre Insulation is made from recycled paper. Packaging is used multiple times than it is biodegradable.
Embodied Fossil Fuel Energy
- for 75mm thick product: 47.0 MJ/m²*
*Calculation is based on data sourced from Alcorn, NZ
Embodied Water
Manufacturer states there is no water used during manufacturing.
Durability
Product does not deteriorate. Some settlement will occur but this is allowed for in the R-Value testing procedures.
Reusability
Product is re-usable, it is recyclable and biodegradable. However reusability depends on the degree to which the material is contaminated during installed period.
Repairability
Not applicable
Design for Dematerialisation
Product operates with less material as insulation blankets as there is no need for overlapping.
Design for Disassembly
Not applicable
Recyclability
Product is fully recyclable.
Maintenance
There is no need for maintenance.
