INTEGRATED DESIGN AND POLICY ISSUES

Hansgrohe  showers, require up to 60% less water than conventional products and without any loss of comfort. Lower hot water consumption means lower energy requirement. And that means: fewer CO2 emissions and lower costs.

HUMAN HEALTH

Health

Chromium plating is common finish for many things such as furniture, motorcycles and many other products, providing corrosion resistance, ease of cleaning and increased surface hardness. Chrome plating is usually done by electroplating which results in a thin layer of chromium on the surface.  According to the list of carcinogenic substances from IARC, chromium metals and Chromium (III) compounds are listed as class 3 (not classified as carcinogenic substances to humans) while Chromium (VI) compounds is listed as class 1 (carcinogenic to humans). Chromium (VI) compounds are highly toxic through inhalation and increasing risk of lung cancer.

It has been confirmed by the plating factory that the plating process is done in accordance with AS 1192-2004 SC2. The compounds used during electroplating are Chromium (VI) oxides. However, the deposited metal are not in Hexavalent (VI) state and the Chromium (VI) compounds are treated to Chromium (III) compounds before discharging. The risk of Chromium (VI) affecting human health in use is minimal. However, manufacturing workers should be provided with Personal Protection Equipments at work and extreme care taken.

Comfort

Product does not impact on active or passive thermal comfort strategies.

Indoor Environment Quality

Your daily shower water demand is reduced by up to 60%: thanks to a flow limiter, special jets and the admixture of air. Thus the hand showers from Hansgrohe dispense only 9.5 litres of water per minute, and the Crometta 85 Green overhead and hand showers dispense only 6 litres of water per minute. Products assist in user’s control of water pressure and adjust the water quantity. It does not matter how high your water pressure is; a “precision O-ring” reacts flexibly to the water pressure and adjusts the water quantity. If the pressure is high, the ring makes the opening smaller. If it is low, it expands the opening.

ECOLOGICAL QUALITY

Terrestrial

Emissions – Manufacture of non ferrous metals (including brass) potentially emit National Pollutant Inventory (NPI) listed substances (source: Non-ferrous Metal Manufacture v1.1, 2001 and Structural and Metal Product) in the country of manufacture. The products also assist in reducing the energy consumed by Heating

Physical – Extraction of brass constituent ores results in the removal and stockpiling of topsoil, and removing overburden and inter-burden, resulting in modified soil profiles, topography and drainage.

Plastic is originally derived from petroleum based polymers. Petrochemical extraction can cause localised terrestrial disturbance around oil fields, via mining infrastructure and subsidence.

Aquatic

Emissions –The extraction brass constituent has localised emissions to aquatic environments around production facilities.

Physical – Petrochemical extraction can cause localised aquatic disturbance around oil fields via mining infrastructure and dredging of the seabed. Petroleum extraction and distribution can also contribute to oil spills at sea.

Spills or accidental discharges of hexavalent chromium from the chroming plant can be highly toxic to aquatic flora, algae and aquatic ecosystems.

The energy savings from the product can reduce localised aquatic disturbance around natural gas and oil fields caused by fossil fuel extraction.

Atmosphere

Greenhouse (GHG) –Products are energy efficient minimizing associated green house gases from operation.

Greenhouse intensity ~ 2.12 kgCO2e / kg for Crometta product.

Transport intensity – Raw materials are manufactured in Germany and transported to South Africa. Energy intensities for shipping product are shown below. The company uses air (22%) and sea transport (78%).

Table below provides land transportation greenhouse intensity figures to help calculate the greenhouse gas intensity of land transportation from shipping port.

Operational efficiency –Not applicable.

Re-use Efficiency –Product may be re-used many times, saving on new systems.

Toxics and Pollutants –Please see Chrome Plating under Human Health section.

Ozone Depletion –No known ozone depleting substances are recorded.

Urban Heat Island Effects –Not applicable

Noise –The product operates extremely quietly.

Biodiversity

During the extracting and manufacturing processes of raw materials biodiversity impacts may be generated through loss of habitat and atmospheric emissions. These have not been quantified in terms of impacts on biological systems, except in the case of oil-spill impacts which, while rare, can have significant long-term, localised impacts
