Isofoam - Isoboard [ECG-Premium] [Cat. 1 - Manufactured]

Overview:

IsoBoard is an extruded polystyrene foam with recycled content designed for use as a thermal insulation in buildings, suitable for residential, commercial, industrial and agro-related constructions.

Product Description:

IsoBoard is an advanced structural and self supporting, thermal insulation material designed to protect the environment by limiting heat transfer into buildings requiring thermal control for reasons of comfort or productivity, thereby reducing energy consumption and therefore is eco sustainable.

The thermoplastic foam has a closed cell structure, contains 25% recycled polystyrene, is 100% recyclable with low water absorption resulting in a long term, durable thermal insulation and is non toxic.

The product is versatile and does not require any particular safety measure during installation and use. For example, product can be used above and below concrete slabs, for cavity of brick walls, for external cladding, ceilings and over purlin covered by roof sheeting or tiles.

INTEGRATED DESIGN AND POLICY ISSUES

The reduction of heat transfer can minimise heating and cooling loads placed on mechanical air conditioning systems in a building. This leads to a reduction in the overall energy consumption of air conditioning plant which represents the largest energy user in a building.

HUMAN HEALTH

Health

Chlorodifluoromethane used as blowing agent is classified as IARC monograph level 3, not classifiable as to carcinogenicity to humans

Product may contain Titanium Dioxide (TiO2)

In 2006, the IARC reclassified titanium dioxide as possibly carcinogenic to humans (Group 2B). This issue of concern relates to the inhalation of powdered and ultra-fine titanium dioxide dust. Accordingly the sanding, grinding and other occupational production activities of products containing titanium dioxide may present issues if appropriate precautions are not taken. Precautions for workers such as reducing exposure to compound in dust form and using appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) mitigates potential issues.

Comfort

Product will either reduce heat inflow into a building during summer or retain heat within a building in winter, providing a more comfortable indoor environment.

Indoor Environment Quality

There is no chemical used in the production that is a volatile organic compound which helps to improve the indoor environmental quality.

ECOLOGICAL QUALITY

Terrestrial

Emissions –There are process emissions associated with the production of polystyrene.

Physical – Insulation core is petrochemical based polystyrene. Petroleum extraction can cause localised terrestrial disturbance around oil fields, via mining infrastructure and subsidence.

Aquatic

Emissions – None known.

Physical – Petrochemical extraction can cause localised aquatic disturbance around oil fields via mining infrastructure and dredging of the seabed. Petroleum extraction and distribution can also contribute to oil spills at sea.

Atmosphere

Greenhouse (GHG) – The GHG present during manufacturing and use are HCFC-142B and HCFC-22.

Greenhouse intensity – The greenhouse gas intensity of the 35 kg/m³ product is: 4526.39kgCO2e / m³.

4526.39*25.10-3= 113.16 kgCO2e / m² for 25mm thickness

4526.39*100.10-3= 452.639 kgCO2e / m² for 100mm thickness

The Global Warming Potential (GWP) over a 100-year time horizon is of    4424.79

HCFC-22: GWP=1700............... in the product: 1.19*1700=2023

HCFC142B: GWP=2400............ in the product: 1.79*2400=2401.79

Total GWP= 2401.79+2023=4424.79

Transport intensity – Product is manufactured locally in Cape Town.

Table below provides land transportation greenhouse intensity figures to help calculate the greenhouse gas intensity of land transportation from shipping port.

Operational efficiency - The product itself requires no energy input once installed and operational.

Re-use Efficiency - If product is used in tilt-up panels it may be re-used and relocated with the wall together.

Toxics and Pollutants - Polystyrene is stable and do not readily react with other elements or compounds in the environment and is not a source of toxics or pollutants in use.

Ozone Depletion - Product contain the blowing agent, HCFC-142B and HCFC-22 that remains in the foam and  have an Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP) of 0.065 and 0.055 relative to CFC 12 (ODP=1).

Urban Heat Island Effects - Product has an insulating core, reducing energy used to heat/cool a building therefore reducing heat absorption of buildings, minimising urban heat island effects.

Noise - Not applicable

Biodiversity

The use of virgin polystyrene generates biodiversity impacts through the atmospheric emissions generated during the refining and manufacturing processes of the virgin polymer. These have not been quantified in terms of impacts on biological systems, except in the case of oil-spill impacts which, while rare, can have significant localised impacts

RESOURCE DEPLETION

Resource Efficiency

Polystyrene is an aromatic polymer made from the monomer styrene, a liquid hydrocarbon that is commercially manufactured from petroleum, which is a non-renewable resource or a by product of crude oil extraction.

Embodied Fossil Fuel Energy

The Embodied Energy for Polystyrene is of 2559.17 MJ/m³, therefore product total embodied energy should be greater

Transport intensity – Product is manufactured in locally in Cape Town.

Embodied Water

No water is used in the production.

Durability

The products have been assessed by Agreement South Africa and the results shows that the product has a durability of above 10 years.

Reusability

The product can be disassembled and re-used.

Repairability

Isoboard panels can be repaired on site with various available crack filling compounds if it is damaged.

Design for Dematerialisation

Not applicable

Design for Disassembly

The product can be disassembled.

Recyclability

The product can be fully recycled.

Maintenance

The Isoboard does not require any special maintenance other than ensuring that neither the insulation board nor the protective loading layer has been displaced. This can be done during normal roof maintenance and/or inspection of membranes, rainwater outlets, gutters and flashings.

Ceiling product may need to be painted.
