Product Description:

Lafarge Jointing Compound is a powdered compound used for jointing plasterboard comprised largely of natural minerals and cellulose based compounds with no known health impacts. It has been specially developed using natural gypsum and additives providing the necessary mixing, workability and application properties needed for installation.

Lafarge Skimming Compound (Skim Lite and Skim Stone) and Lafarge Finishing Compound are powdered compounds used for skimming on the surface of plasterboard or sand-cement wall. They are used as an undercoat for all types of paintings. They have also been specially developed using natural gypsum and additives providing the necessary mixing, workability and application properties needed for installation. Product is suitable for use in highly humid environments.

The settling time for Skim Lite and Skim Stone are different and so depending on the weather condition, appropriate product is to be used.

Warranty

Applications vary with regard to conditions and requirements, should there be a query with regard to product, the site in question will be visited conducting a full investigation, followed by a report, and should the failure be as a direct result of product performance, Lafarge Gypsum will reach an agreement with parties concerned.

Expected Life

Dependant on site conditions, environment and general maintenance of the building, products are claimed by Lafarge to be expected to last at least 10 years in both residential and commercial applications. Although in practical terms, if the surface is kept dry, stable and in good condition, there should be no reason for the product to degrade for many years after this time.

Projects

Lafarge skimming compounds are used throughout SA on projects where plaster board is used to complete the jointing process.

Lafarge finishing compounds are used in various housing and industrial projects in the Western Cape, supply through branch network and selected distributors.

Preparation

Products are mixed with water into a paste and applied to surface.

INTEGRATED DESIGN AND POLICY ISSUES

Lafarge Plasters and compounds are made with pure and clean gypsum free from heavy metals. Products are designed to minimize the efforts during the mixing and to avoid lumps formation. The absorption of Jointing compound mortar water by plasterboard surface is retarded by the means of special additives present in Jointing compound. These additives and other resins guarantee a long lasting adherence.

HUMAN HEALTH

Health

Over exposure to dust may result in respiratory irritation causing coughing and sneezing.

If dust is generated use a respirator or dust mask in accordance with local health & safety requirement. If no local requirement refer to BS4275:1974 or AS/NZS 1715 & 1716

If finished surface is to be sanded particular attention should be paid to provision of Personal Protective Equipment to minimise dust exposure.

The products have been submitted to the ecospecifier Cautionary Assessment Process ( ESCAP) and no issues of concern or red lights comments exist regarding the toxicity of the products.

Comfort

Products are made out of a breathing material and together with plasterboard (and if painted with a breathable paint) hence create a healthy atmosphere by allowing balancing of the moisture conditions within the building and mitigating the potential for condensation or moisture build up.

Indoor Environment Quality

Products have low to zero VOC content (less than 1g/litre of product). Volatile organic compounds are a large factor in the occurrence of poor indoor air quality.

ECOLOGICAL QUALITY

Terrestrial

Emissions – product may have aqueous saline emissions during the production phase from mined gypsum due to leaching of salt to land and processing by-product waste resulting in increased  soil salinity .

Physical – Gypsum extraction has impacts on the physical attributes of the environment where the operations occur. Extraction of gypsum results in the removal and stockpiling of topsoil, sub soil and sand, and in the removal of overburden and inter-burden, resulting in modified soil/sand profiles, topography and drainage.

Aquatic

Emissions –Gypsum is leached typically with rainwater water when stored in large stockpiles in order to remove the salt from the raw mineral. This increases waterway salinity and turbidity.

Physical – No known physical impacts.

Atmosphere

Greenhouse (GHG) – No more than 50%of thegypsum plaster used by Lafarge is manufactured by calcinating raw gypsum, an energy intensive operation. The remaining gypsum used by Lafarge Gypsum South Africa is recovered through flue gas desulfurization from thermal plants overseas. This operation consists in the removal of sulphur dioxide from exhaust fumes by reaction with limestone to produce calcium sulphite and carbon dioxide. The desulfurization processes sulphur emissions that cause acid rain.

Greenhouse intensity –

Skim-Lite has a greenhouse intensity of 5.2 kgCO2 / per 40kg bag.
Skim-Stone has a greenhouse intensity of 4.29 kgCO2 / per 33kg bag
Lafarge finishing compound has a greenhouse intensity of 3.25 kgCO2 / per 25kg bag
Lafarge Jointing plaster has a greenhouse intensity of 2.6 kgCO2 / per 20kg bag
