INTEGRATED DESIGN AND POLICY ISSUES

Low VOC paints are valuable products in terms of human health, but are also beneficial in terms of delivering improved worker productivity in commercial office situation due to improved concentration, reduced absenteeism, allergies and sickness.

Normal painting practices may be used for installation. Low VOC emissions will allow earlier reoccupation of buildings than conventional coatings.

HUMAN HEALTH

Health

Paints as a category can have some toxic compounds that can be dangerous both during and after their application. Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) emissions are the predominant health concern for paints and lacquers because they can cause significant health impacts, including cancer. The paint has considerably low VOC content which highly reduces the risk of VOC affecting human health.

The paints contain certain pigments that contain safety phrases. As for all paints, painters should always wear protective equipments when painting.

Comfort

Not applicable

Indoor Environment Quality

Plascon has provided calculations that the product has a low VOC content of less than 16 g/litre which meets the requirements of the Green Star recommendation levels set by the Green Building Council of Australia.

Electromagnetic Radiation

Not applicable

Safety

As with all paints, product should be applied in well ventilated areas to minimize inhalation of vapours and proper Personal Protective equipment should be worn to minimize contact with skin and eyes during application.  Refer to products Material Safety Data Sheet before use for more information.

ECOLOGICAL QUALITY

Terrestrial

Emissions – No known emissions.

Physical – Extraction of titanium dioxide results in the removal and stockpiling of topsoil, sub-soil and sand, and from removing overburden and inter-burden, resulting in modified soil/sand profiles, topography and drainage.

Product contains, acrylic polymers originally derived from petroleum based polymers. Petrochemical extraction can cause localised terrestrial disturbance around oil fields, via mining infrastructure and subsidence.

Aquatic

Emissions – No known emissions.

Physical –Petrochemical extraction can cause localised aquatic disturbance around oil fields via mining infrastructure and dredging of the seabed. Petroleum extraction and distribution can also contribute to oil spills at sea.

Mineral extraction of titanium dioxide, via sand mining, is common in marine environments such as lakes and coastal areas and will have localised disruptive impacts to ecosystems caused by mining processes.

Atmosphere

Greenhouse (GHG) – Manufacture of product produced greenhouse gas emissions similar to conventional production methods for paints and lacquers.

Greenhouse intensity – The coverage specification for Evolutions Satin, Evolutions Matt, Evolutions Acrylic Matt, Evolutions Gloss, Evolutions Primer are 131, 131, 119, 122, 110 grams per square metres respectively. The greenhouse intensity is 0.061, 0.061, 0.05, 0.053 and 0.043 kgCO2e / m² with reference to Bath University.

Provide calculations of GHG intensity in the following table:

Biodiversity

Product contains acrylic polymersoriginally derived from petroleum based polymers. These have not been quantified in terms of impacts on biological systems, except in the case of oil-spill impacts which, while rare, can have significant long-term, localised impacts.

Product contains titanium dioxide, extracted through sand mining, a high biodiversity impact process. Mining leads to loss of biodiversity, modified soil/sand profiles, topography and drainage, which additionally impacts natural vegetation and surrounding biodiversity.

RESOURCE DEPLETION

Resource Efficiency

Acrylic polymers (10-30%) are derived from petroleum, a finite and limited resource. Titanium dioxide is an abundant, but non-renewable resource.

Embodied Fossil Fuel Energy

The coverage specification for Evolutions Satin, Evolutions Matt, Evolutions Acrylic Matt, Evolutions Gloss, Evolutions Primer are 131, 131, 119, 122, 110 grams per square metres respectively. ECOSPECIFIER ISSUES OF CONCERN / RED LIGHTS

Product contains pigments such as titanium dioxide and some colours contain carbon black in liquid form. In 2006, the IARC reclassified dry, inhaled titanium dioxide and carbon black as possibly carcinogenic to humans (Group 2B).

This red light comment relates to the inhalation of powdered dry titanium dioxide and carbon black dust which is NOT the form encountered with this product by users but potentially in manufacturing and OH&S contexts.

Accordingly the sanding, grinding and other occupational production activities of products containing titanium dioxide and carbon black may present issues if appropriate precautions are not taken. Precautions for workers such as reducing exposure to product in dust form and using appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) mitigate potential issues to low risk in accordance with an ecospecifier Risk Assessment. This risk is mitigated by the fact that even dust generated by sanding will be bound within the acrylic polymer matrix of the paint and unlikely to cause the original risk identified in context with inhalation of the original titanium dioxide and carbon black dust  Hence, this issue is unlikely to be of any consequence in application, use or disposal. Refer to Material Safety Data sheet for further information.
